Chicago Blackhawks: Connor Bedard's Agent Advised Against Re-Signing in 2025

The Chicago Blackhawks are facing a morale issue heading into their game on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings. The Blackhawks have been struggling, losing five consecutive games, notably suffering 6-2 losses to both the Vancouver Canucks and the Seattle Kraken.
During that period, second-year center Connor Bedard hasn't been showcasing his finest form. He has not been performing at his best level recently. fined for receiving two conduct violations for arguing with officials.
Bedard notched his inaugural goal on Tuesday, marking his first score since the Chicago Blackhawks secured a 4-3 victory against the Utah HC in overtime on March 7. However, his teammate Jason Dickinson commented the point “didn’t matter” in another losing effort.
Some frustrated fans are requesting the Blackhawks to trade Bedard While much of the fanbase acknowledges that Chicago must add more talent around the first-round selection from the 2023 draft.
Connor Bedard can be extended this summer.
At the age of 19, Bedard could be extended a new contract with the Blackhawks this summer; however, ex-NHL exec Craig Button discouraged Bedard’s agent after he brought back his client to Chicago following the chaos the organization has caused in two years.
When it comes to Connor Bedard, the Chicago Blackhawks seem quite poor," Button stated during an appearance on Donnie & Dhali. "He becomes eligible to sign a new contract extension starting July 1st of this upcoming summer.
If I were his agent, I would not agree to extend Connor Bedard’s contract right now since there isn't much advantage for him in doing so within this upcoming season. He will earn the same amount of money anyway, both before and after July 1st of the following year. Plus, agreeing to an early extension might expose him to possible counteroffers.
An instance of failure by the Chicago Blackhawks

Newport Sports Management handles Bedard’s representation. Button contended that apart from the financial increase expected in 2026, the Blackhawks have not demonstrated to Bedard their commitment to constructing a winning team around him.
Button stated that Bedard requires proof from the Chicago Blackhawks demonstrating that his signature on an extended contract justifies him remaining with the team. Currently, there isn’t anything in Chicago suggesting that committing long-term would be advantageous. This is the perspective I have on the situation.
This rests with the Chicago Blackhawks to improve their situation. The salary cap is increasing after all. Just remember that the current Collective Bargaining Agreement lasts until September 15, 2026. Unless they sign a new agreement before then, the rules for offer sheets will remain unchanged. Therefore, I believe Chicago should be quite worried.
Button's remarks ought to serve as a wake-up call for the front office. Not being able to resign Bedard before he reaches free agency in 2026 would constitute a significant misstep for Chicago.
Honestly, the mere thought among supporters regarding potential trades or the risk of losing Bedard in free agency indicates a failure in itself.
